Itsy Bitsy Spider...

April 08, 2016 in Animal Photography

This was taken in Colorado. A spider had set up residence with a massive web right across my door. It was almost a 45 degree angle from the corner of the door frame to the opposite door frame. Naturally, given the nature of its location, I had to take some macro shots.

Macro is something I really enjoy. Unfortunately, most of the time, I don't have the set up or TIME to get down low and get the shot perfect. Usually, I'm with other people, and the amount of patience macro takes is extreme.

I had both a rim light and a key light on this little fella, and they were taken with over-kill strobes. The wind would rock him in and out of frame, and since I was handholding with a 105mm+1.7TC meant that I took something around a couple hundred shots until I found this one. I couldn't even see through the viewfinder; it was so dark. Basically, I don't think I knew it was untangling its own web until I looked at the pictures afterward. Another reason I love photography is: what you can see more than your eyes would normally see, given the gift of time in observation.

ISO 64, 180mm (105+1.7TC), F/45, 1/250s.
